F or those unacquainted with ABC’s hit whodunnit series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, based on author Kerry Greenwood’s detective novels and set in 1920s Melbourne, each episode begins with somebody carking it. The show’s three seasons (there’s also a spin-off called Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries) depicts a variety of, shall we say, not ideal ways of exiting the mortal coil – from shootings and stabbings to poisonings, hangings and even beheadings. The fashionista-detective Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) inevitably solves each case and reveals the killer in a succinctly worded monologue towards the end. One approaches a movie spin-off expecting greater spectacle and a larger body count. On that level Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears – Fisher’s first foray to the big screen, which was partially crowdfunded by the fans who made the series something of a cult hit – more or less delivers, though the first death occurs well into the running time and is unimaginatively staged: one of those cliched “person with information dies before being able to spill the beans” incidents. Directed by Tony Tisle and written by Deb Cox, the film’s globetrotting storyline sounds action-packed, but plays out scene by scene with surprising lethargy; the experience never really springs to life. Its protagonist certainly has a lot of up and go, racing across rooftops in Jerusalem early in the piece and busting a young Bedouin woman, Shirin (Izabella Yena), out of prison before leaping on to a moving train. Locations range from the deserts of the Negev to rain-soaked streets in London. There are many loopy Saturday matinee style elements: think along the lines of precious artefacts, a tattoo that doubles as a map, and glowing green rocks that are supposed to be treasures but look like they’re made of plastic. The central mystery involves what happened to Shirin’s family and village, which was wiped out when she was a child by a disaster said to be connected to a mysterious amulet. Fishers’ long-time “will they or won’t they’’ potential interest Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page) comes along for the ride, very much the second fiddle. In tone and temperament, Crypt of Tears has the distinct waft of an 80s movie made during the 10BA era in Australia, when generous tax incentives encouraged cashed-up film-makers to create kooky spectacles. I was reminded particularly of the 1986 adventure movie Sky Pirates, a sporadically entertaining flop starring John Hargreaves as a pilot at the centre of a narrative involving time travel and sacred stone tablets. But Crypt of Tears doesn’t have the “let’s burn money and film it” showiness of a 10BA film. In fact, lavish wardrobe and some opulent locations notwithstanding, it looks cheap. And indeed it was, costing a reported $8m, which is pittance for a period feature of this scale. The penny-pinching aesthetic is particularly noticeable in exterior city shots in which the background is blurred out, saving costs by reducing the need for period details. One of the film’s biggest problems is the flavourless cinematography of Roger Lanser, whose framing doesn’t look much more adventurous here than it did in his previous feature – the awful low-fi comedy That’s Not My Dog. While staging scenes – often simple dialogue exchanges – Lanser frequently moves the frame left to right, or right to left, or up to down, or in half circle-like curving motions, attempting to jazz up a visual experience largely comprised of bland mid shots. Essie Davis is a delight in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears and the costumes are absolutely fabulous. Photograph: Roadshow Entertainment It is largely for this reason that Tisle rarely conjures a cinematic feel, despite situations clearly intended to create heightened atmosphere – from action moments including the aforementioned speeding train, to dark rooms lit up by flashes of lightning. The dialogue is often hokey and hackneyed (“that woman has more lives than an alley cat! ”) and the narrative structure oddly muddled, with derivative tangents and ho-hum flashbacks. On several occasions I had to pause to remind myself what the story was about and what each of the characters were trying to achieve. There are moments of Scooby Doo-ish schlock and Hallmark sentiment – particularly in the continuation of Phryne and Jack’s relationship, which fans of the show will dig. Essie Davis is a delight, as she was always going to be, in a role that now fits her hand in decadent leather glove. The costumes are of course absolutely fabulous and it’s a rush to see them used in on-the-run situations, the script affording Fisher the pluck and derring-do of Indiana Jones – when the experience is not bogged down in yackety-yak, which unfortunately it is for the majority of the running time. It’s also refreshing to see such a strong, stylish, empowered female character at an age that is sadly unconventional for lead roles in film and television – Fisher neither a 20-something go-getter nor an older Jessica Fletcher or Miss Marple type figure. But these are strengths of the show rather than unique selling points for the movie. Many of the TV episodes are snappy, breezy, moreish affairs. The film on the other hand is messy, uninspiring and – despite some kooky flourishes and pretty costumes – lacks energy and verve. • Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday 27 February.

This is our review of the movie, but as usual, no matter what we say, we still recommend you to go and see it at your local cinema because there is no better critic than yourself! Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears brings the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries television series to the silver screen. Nessie Davis reprises her role as Phryne Fisher, the sophisticated no nonsense 1920s private detective. The film is set a few years after the events of the third season. After freeing a young Bedouin girl from her unjust imprisonment in Jerusalem, Miss Fisher enlists the help of Detective Robinson to help solve a decade-old mystery of the crypt of tears and to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a forgotten tribe. For fans of the television series, Miss Fisher is a joy to watch from start to finish. The story is filled with Miss Fisher’s sharp one liners, stunning costumes, an enthralling plot and captures the alluring 1920’s aesthetic of the television series. Nessie Davis and Nathan Page have a terrific chemistry onscreen playing the on again off again detective duo. Viewers do not need to see the television series to understand the character motivations or plot, as these are explained in the film. The film follows particular themes and a style which all 1920s noir murder mysteries adhere too, such as the Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express. One trope used in this particularly genre centers around the juxtaposition between the East and the West. The East is represented as mysterious, mythical and otherworldly whilst the West is seen as ordered and civilised. Although the genre of Miss Fisher relies on such tropes, they could have been subverted or commented on instead of being re-used. The film uses these tropes to create a formulaic plot. Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears brings back characters’ audiences know and love and the film is a fun, mysterious adventure from start to finish. The film’s budget is due in part to crowdfunding campaigns which made over $250, 000. This shows the audiences’ love and support for the show and continual desire to hear Australian stories. Let’s celebrate and discuss the chemistry, the costumes, and why we deserve another movie. Miss Fisher is back! Finally, five years after the last series ended (the first three seasons now stream exclusively on Acorn TV), our favorite female detective returns, and she returns in glorious style, gold handgun and all. Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears released this week as an exclusive Acorn TV feature film. And the excruciatingly long wait was worth it! With absolute certainty, I attest that this romantic mystery is just what the doctor ordered as good, escapist entertainment. ABOUT MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES For the uninitiated into the fabulous and fashionable world of Miss Fisher, the original Australian series is a 1920s period mystery. Vivacious, intelligent, and particularly independent for the period, Miss Fisher returns to Melbourne and begins a career as a private detective, much to the dismay of the handsome Detective Inspector Jack Robinson. Eventually, Phryne wins him over with her charm as they solve crimes together and slowly fall in love (even though she isn’t the marrying type at all. ) The original series based on Kerry Greenwood’s novels is exciting, hysterical, and sweet (don’t forget the adorable romance between Phryne’s assistant Dot and constable Hugh). Did I mention unabashedly romantic? Oh, how I loved the passionate stares between Jack and Phryne. A dance here, a flirty look there, and maybe even a kiss to build the momentum. THE GORGEOUS COSTUMES However, let’s not forget the real star: Miss Fisher’s sensational wardrobe. Exquisite in detail and elegant, sometimes outlandish in the best of ways, each of Phryne’s chic outfits emphasizes not only the time period but also her independent and flirtatious personality. She’s a woman who loves being a woman, and she won’t apologize for it. Plus, she refuses to follow the rules set out for her sex. Thankfully, Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears continues to recognize how vital Phryne’s wardrobe is to the product of this lively and fabulous female character. ‘ MISS FISHER AND THE CRYPT OF TEARS ‘ REVIEW: INDIANA JONES MEETS ROMANCE ADVENTURE SERIALS The new fan-funded movie, while filmed much later, continues presumably only a few months after the last episode. (Although it also works as a standalone. ) This time, however, Phryne, our private detective, solves crimes on a much more global scale, the opening scene in British occupied Palestine reminiscent of James Bond or an Indiana Jones film. (With Miss Fisher’s stylish costumes as important as Indy’s whip. ) Sure, I miss the Australian setting. But presenting Miss Fisher and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson as a mystery-solving duo traveling the world works seamlessly for the romantic adventure genre, which is what the new movie is: a romantic adventure in the style of an old-fashioned adventure serial. RELATED: Romantic Moment of the Week: Jack and Miss Fisher Near the beginning, after rescuing Shirin, a girl from unjust imprisonment, Phryne is presumed dead. Soon after, several friends and family go to London to mourn the loss, including Jack. He travels to grieve over Phryne with a broken heart only to realize she’s not dead at all! Unfortunately, the two are more estranged than the last time we saw them, and Jack wants nothing to do with her. How will Phryne seduce and charm him back all while solving an international crime? Meanwhile, ancient curses, treasures, imperialism, and Alexander the Great collide as Phryne and Jack set out to discover the mystery behind the massacre of Shirin’s family. Not to mention how all the strange pieces connect. Indeed, while Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries initially was a cozy mystery series, The Crypt of Tears is more supernatural with a mystical, archaeological bent. JACK AND MISS FISHER Furthermore, it isn’t the mystery that stands out here at all. Instead, it’s about romance. The drama. The adventure. Assuredly, the romance between Jack and Phryne still smolders. You’ll swoon as the two argue, flirt, and save each other from danger. And yes, there may even be quicksand. Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears offers up an excellent romantic adventure that we sadly never get anymore (Does anyone else love The Mummy?! ). Honestly, the stylish film succeeds because the filmmakers wholeheartedly embrac e romance. While the movie’s mystery falters at times with the pacing and reveals and, yes, I wish Dot and Hugh did more than their cameo appearances, I don’t care because what does succeed is why I watch the genre in the first place. OVERALL THOUGHTS Overall, once you accept the movie as an old-fashioned, yet fun, sensational, romantic adventure movie with a feminist twist, you’ll overlook the weak components of a rushed mystery. The film never aims to be a serious award winner, and that’s refreshing. Plus, for the Jane Austen fans, there’s also Rupert Penry Jones as a bonus. Enjoy! You won’t be sorry.
