F or those unacquainted with ABC’s hit whodunnit series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, based on author Kerry Greenwood’s detective novels and set in 1920s Melbourne, each episode begins with somebody carking it. The show’s three seasons (there’s also a spin-off called Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries) depicts a variety of, shall we say, not ideal ways of exiting the mortal coil – from shootings and stabbings to poisonings, hangings and even beheadings. The fashionista-detective Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) inevitably solves each case and reveals the killer in a succinctly worded monologue towards the end. One approaches a movie spin-off expecting greater spectacle and a larger body count. On that level Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears – Fisher’s first foray to the big screen, which was partially crowdfunded by the fans who made the series something of a cult hit – more or less delivers, though the first death occurs well into the running time and is unimaginatively staged: one of those cliched “person with information dies before being able to spill the beans” incidents. Directed by Tony Tisle and written by Deb Cox, the film’s globetrotting storyline sounds action-packed, but plays out scene by scene with surprising lethargy; the experience never really springs to life. Its protagonist certainly has a lot of up and go, racing across rooftops in Jerusalem early in the piece and busting a young Bedouin woman, Shirin (Izabella Yena), out of prison before leaping on to a moving train. Locations range from the deserts of the Negev to rain-soaked streets in London. There are many loopy Saturday matinee style elements: think along the lines of precious artefacts, a tattoo that doubles as a map, and glowing green rocks that are supposed to be treasures but look like they’re made of plastic. The central mystery involves what happened to Shirin’s family and village, which was wiped out when she was a child by a disaster said to be connected to a mysterious amulet. Fishers’ long-time “will they or won’t they’’ potential interest Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page) comes along for the ride, very much the second fiddle. In tone and temperament, Crypt of Tears has the distinct waft of an 80s movie made during the 10BA era in Australia, when generous tax incentives encouraged cashed-up film-makers to create kooky spectacles. I was reminded particularly of the 1986 adventure movie Sky Pirates, a sporadically entertaining flop starring John Hargreaves as a pilot at the centre of a narrative involving time travel and sacred stone tablets. But Crypt of Tears doesn’t have the “let’s burn money and film it” showiness of a 10BA film. In fact, lavish wardrobe and some opulent locations notwithstanding, it looks cheap. And indeed it was, costing a reported $8m, which is pittance for a period feature of this scale. The penny-pinching aesthetic is particularly noticeable in exterior city shots in which the background is blurred out, saving costs by reducing the need for period details. One of the film’s biggest problems is the flavourless cinematography of Roger Lanser, whose framing doesn’t look much more adventurous here than it did in his previous feature – the awful low-fi comedy That’s Not My Dog. While staging scenes – often simple dialogue exchanges – Lanser frequently moves the frame left to right, or right to left, or up to down, or in half circle-like curving motions, attempting to jazz up a visual experience largely comprised of bland mid shots. Essie Davis is a delight in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears and the costumes are absolutely fabulous. Photograph: Roadshow Entertainment It is largely for this reason that Tisle rarely conjures a cinematic feel, despite situations clearly intended to create heightened atmosphere – from action moments including the aforementioned speeding train, to dark rooms lit up by flashes of lightning. The dialogue is often hokey and hackneyed (“that woman has more lives than an alley cat! ”) and the narrative structure oddly muddled, with derivative tangents and ho-hum flashbacks. On several occasions I had to pause to remind myself what the story was about and what each of the characters were trying to achieve. There are moments of Scooby Doo-ish schlock and Hallmark sentiment – particularly in the continuation of Phryne and Jack’s relationship, which fans of the show will dig. Essie Davis is a delight, as she was always going to be, in a role that now fits her hand in decadent leather glove. The costumes are of course absolutely fabulous and it’s a rush to see them used in on-the-run situations, the script affording Fisher the pluck and derring-do of Indiana Jones – when the experience is not bogged down in yackety-yak, which unfortunately it is for the majority of the running time. It’s also refreshing to see such a strong, stylish, empowered female character at an age that is sadly unconventional for lead roles in film and television – Fisher neither a 20-something go-getter nor an older Jessica Fletcher or Miss Marple type figure. But these are strengths of the show rather than unique selling points for the movie. Many of the TV episodes are snappy, breezy, moreish affairs. The film on the other hand is messy, uninspiring and – despite some kooky flourishes and pretty costumes – lacks energy and verve. • Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday 27 February.

Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears brings the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries television series to the silver screen. Nessie Davis reprises her role as Phryne Fisher, the sophisticated no nonsense 1920s private detective. The film is set a few years after the events of the third season. After freeing a young Bedouin girl from her unjust imprisonment in Jerusalem, Miss Fisher enlists the help of Detective Robinson to help solve a decade-old mystery of the crypt of tears and to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a forgotten tribe. For fans of the television series, Miss Fisher is a joy to watch from start to finish. The story is filled with Miss Fisher’s sharp one liners, stunning costumes, an enthralling plot and captures the alluring 1920’s aesthetic of the television series. Nessie Davis and Nathan Page have a terrific chemistry onscreen playing the on again off again detective duo. Viewers do not need to see the television series to understand the character motivations or plot, as these are explained in the film. The film follows particular themes and a style which all 1920s noir murder mysteries adhere too, such as the Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express. One trope used in this particularly genre centers around the juxtaposition between the East and the West. The East is represented as mysterious, mythical and otherworldly whilst the West is seen as ordered and civilised. Although the genre of Miss Fisher relies on such tropes, they could have been subverted or commented on instead of being re-used. The film uses these tropes to create a formulaic plot. Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears brings back characters’ audiences know and love and the film is a fun, mysterious adventure from start to finish. The film’s budget is due in part to crowdfunding campaigns which made over $250, 000. This shows the audiences’ love and support for the show and continual desire to hear Australian stories. Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears released this week as an exclusive Acorn TV feature film. And the excruciatingly long wait was worth it! With absolute certainty, I attest that this romantic mystery is just what the doctor ordered as good, escapist entertainment. ABOUT MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES For the uninitiated into the fabulous and fashionable world of Miss Fisher, the original Australian series is a 1920s period mystery. Vivacious, intelligent, and particularly independent for the period, Miss Fisher returns to Melbourne and begins a career as a private detective, much to the dismay of the handsome Detective Inspector Jack Robinson. Eventually, Phryne wins him over with her charm as they solve crimes together and slowly fall in love (even though she isn’t the marrying type at all. ) The original series based on Kerry Greenwood’s novels is exciting, hysterical, and sweet (don’t forget the adorable romance between Phryne’s assistant Dot and constable Hugh). Exquisite in detail and elegant, sometimes outlandish in the best of ways, each of Phryne’s chic outfits emphasizes not only the time period but also her independent and flirtatious personality. She’s a woman who loves being a woman, and she won’t apologize for it. Plus, she refuses to follow the rules set out for her sex. Thankfully, Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears continues to recognize how vital Phryne’s wardrobe is to the product of this lively and fabulous female character. ‘ MISS FISHER AND THE CRYPT OF TEARS ‘ REVIEW: INDIANA JONES MEETS ROMANCE ADVENTURE SERIALS The new fan-funded movie, while filmed much later, continues presumably only a few months after the last episode. (Although it also works as a standalone. ) This time, however, Phryne, our private detective, solves crimes on a much more global scale, the opening scene in British occupied Palestine reminiscent of James Bond or an Indiana Jones film. (With Miss Fisher’s stylish costumes as important as Indy’s whip. ) Sure, I miss the Australian setting. But presenting Miss Fisher and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson as a mystery-solving duo traveling the world works seamlessly for the romantic adventure genre, which is what the new movie is: a romantic adventure in the style of an old-fashioned adventure serial. RELATED: Romantic Moment of the Week: Jack and Miss Fisher Near the beginning, after rescuing Shirin, a girl from unjust imprisonment, Phryne is presumed dead. Soon after, several friends and family go to London to mourn the loss, including Jack. He travels to grieve over Phryne with a broken heart only to realize she’s not dead at all! Unfortunately, the two are more estranged than the last time we saw them, and Jack wants nothing to do with her. How will Phryne seduce and charm him back all while solving an international crime? Meanwhile, ancient curses, treasures, imperialism, and Alexander the Great collide as Phryne and Jack set out to discover the mystery behind the massacre of Shirin’s family. Not to mention how all the strange pieces connect. Indeed, while Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries initially was a cozy mystery series, The Crypt of Tears is more supernatural with a mystical, archaeological bent. JACK AND MISS FISHER Furthermore, it isn’t the mystery that stands out here at all. Instead, it’s about romance. The drama. The adventure. Assuredly, the romance between Jack and Phryne still smolders. You’ll swoon as the two argue, flirt, and save each other from danger. And yes, there may even be quicksand. Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears offers up an excellent romantic adventure that we sadly never get anymore (Does anyone else love The Mummy?! ). Honestly, the stylish film succeeds because the filmmakers wholeheartedly embrac e romance. While the movie’s mystery falters at times with the pacing and reveals and, yes, I wish Dot and Hugh did more than their cameo appearances, I don’t care because what does succeed is why I watch the genre in the first place. OVERALL THOUGHTS Overall, once you accept the movie as an old-fashioned, yet fun, sensational, romantic adventure movie with a feminist twist, you’ll overlook the weak components of a rushed mystery. The film never aims to be a serious award winner, and that’s refreshing. Plus, for the Jane Austen fans, there’s also Rupert Penry Jones as a bonus. Enjoy! You won’t be sorry. Antes de empezar la asignatura, muchos de nosotros creíamos que el marketing era sinónimo de publicidad; en cierta medida lo es, pero también va mucho más allá. Gracias a los conocimientos que hemos podido adquirir, somos capaces ahora de ver que el color de un yogur o un determinado precio provienen de cálculos y suposiciones: en otras palabras, de una estrategia de marketing.

Esto no quiere decir que vamos a dejar de ser engañados por esos elementos que nos atraen sin que nos demos cuenta... pero al menos sabremos después de unos minutos de reflexión que lo hubiéramos podido relacionar con alguna cosa que nos ha dicho Carlos en clase.
Por esta razón (y unas más) me parece lógico agradecerle por esos conocimientos, pero también por haber tenido la paciencia de repetir una y otra vez en qué consistía este diario.

Espero haber seguido las pautas; en el caso contrario, lo lamento, pero al menos, habré sacado algo haciéndolo: ver a mi alrededor que lo que se aprende en clase tiene más aplicaciones en la realidad de lo que hubiera podido imaginar.

Bollylandia

Miércoles 31 de Mayo. Ciudad Universitaria está completamente invadida por esta marea amarilla. Explicación: el nuevo Bollylandia mini. Distribución en masa de muestras gratuitas con un papelito explicando al mismo tiempo las condiciones del concurso que te permitirá ganar un coche o un iPod. Ah y de paso también promocionan la página web del producto... ¡Qué campaña! De verdad, si el público-diana era los jóvenes de entre 18 y 25 años, han hecho muy bien: nadie que pasaba por allí podía evitar la ola amarillenta.
Pero esto me recuerda los 3 pares de círculos que veíamos el otro día en clase, sobre los efectos de la publicidad. Me pregunto si los costes de la campaña (toda la gente distribuía los miles de muestras) no fueron demasiado altos para los posibles efectos...

Expansión del 30 de mayo de 2006

Lamento que no se vea mejor el artículo, y para intentar remediar a este problema, citaré nada más la primera frase, la que más me ha llamado la atención: "La publicidad está dejando de ser un medio para convertirse en un producto de consumo". El reciente artículo habla del éxito de "Amo a Laura", campaña de la cadena musical MTV, que se destaca por ser una campaña que ha implicado tanto al a la televisión, Internet, las Relaciones Públicas, el correo electrónico como el boca a boca. Es verdad, sin tener acceso a la cadena en cuestión, ya me había llegado la noticia de una campaña "loca" de MTV muy divertida porque increíblemente ridícula.

Al parecer, es una tendencia que está llegando estos años: en efecto, parece que sigue la línea de "ReferéndumPlus", un refresco que motivaba a los jóvenes a ir a votar en el Referéndum para la Constitución europea, entre otros. La idea es integrar la mayor cantidad posible de medios de comunicación; de esta forma nos aseguramos de "establecer el contacto", paso 2 de los mecanismos de la Acción Publicitaria.

Gaultier

Mecanismos de la Acción Publicitaria, paso 3: conseguir la atención. Yo creo que con este anuncio impactante basado en el contraste y en lo "osado", la casa Gaultier lo ha logrado. Lo más sorprendente aún: el nombre del perfume.. ¡Classique!

Seat... ya estás perdido

Otra campaña de comunicación en el metro madrileño, esta vez en Ciudad Universitaria. Esta vez considero que se ha hecho una muy buena operación, por varias razones. La primera es el lugar: el nuevo coche (re-re-relanzado, también podríamos hablar de su ciclo de vida) conviene muy bien a la vida de los jóvenes: es pequeño, práctico, y no tan caro, y el anuncio se encuentra cerca de las universidades, donde hay más concentración de personas entre 18 y 25 años.

La segunda razón es el mensaje y la forma de la campaña: han puesto carteles por todas partes, los pasillos están recubiertos de fotos del coche, con indicaciones: "no mires abajo" (para un cartel puesto en el suelo); "Sigue adelante e intenta no pensar en el coche rojo" (para un cartel puesto en el camino para llegar o a la salida o al metro... no hay otro paso) etc...
¡Ver esto y quedarse pensando en el mensaje.... y en el coche... es inevitable!

X-men

Aquí tenemos un cartel inmenso que presenta la película X-men 3 en el andén de la línea 3 (que ha sido cerrada recientemente) del metro de Madrid, en Sol. Aquí vemos que el público-diana elegido por la compañía ha sido muy amplio... ¿demasiado tal vez? Creo que no todos somos consumidores potenciales de este producto, y sin embargo todos lo que cogemos el metro sí vemos la campaña de comunicación. Por tanto yo lo vería como un malgasto de los recursos de la empresa... veo a muchos ancianos en el metro, y realmente no les imagino yendo a ver X-men, ni tampoco diciéndoles a sus hijos o nietos que vayan a verla.

Metro de Bilbao, Madrid

"Soñar cuesta poco". Es lo que está escrito en la parte superior de este cartel. Otra vez, se trata claramente de disminuir la imagen de gasto, a favor de los beneficios del producto (en este caso un hotel). No hay mucho más para decir, ya que se ha mencionado el tema antes... yo creo que no es una publicidad muy impactante, y probablemente si no hubiera hecho la relación con lo que habíamos dicho en clase, ni siquiera la hubiera notado...

Unicef

Uno de los primeros días de clase: Concepto de Marketing. Habíamos hablado de las clasificaciones del Marketing, citando el empresarial, el político, el gubernamental, y para instituciones sin ánimo de lucro. Pues es lo que tenemos aquí: una publicidad para Unicef en un pequeño sobre de azúcar, lo cual me parece una excelente idea... la gente suele fijarse mucho en esos sobres, tomándose el café. A lo mejor no es comparable a las campañas impactantes (en las pantallas del Metro por ejemplo) de otras ONG, pero por lo menos creo que llega a mucha gente.

Magnum

El envase es lo que normalmente protege el producto; también sirve para informar al consumidor sobre por ejemplo los ingredientes, el peso, la marca etc... (obligaciones legales entre otras cosas). Hemos visto además que el envase sirve para llamar la atención del consumidor; ejemplo, el champú Fructis que se ve a un kilómetro de distancia. En este caso, sorpresa: el logo del helado está hasta DENTRO del envase. Como para prácticamente todos los artículos expuestos aquí, me gustaría saber por qué. Me atrevo a decir que es para intentar fidelizar al cliente, ya que como la persona que es capaz de verlo YA ha comprado (y se ha comido) el helado, dudo que intentemos venderlo.
Por tanto esto me recuerda un hecho sobre el cual nuestro profesor ha insistido mucho: al contrario de las otras P del Marketing Mix, la comunicación no tiene como objetivo el incremento de las ventas, sino el dar a conocer el producto.

Pasta de dientes 3D

Acabo de descubrir algo revolucionario: ¡una pasta de dientes que los limpie en 3 dimensiones! Sólo puedo suponer que ha sido una idea del departamento de Marketing para sorprender al consumidor, porque realmente no entiendo el significado... ¿esto quiere decir que MI pasta de dientes sólo me los limpia en 2 dimensiones? Además pone en el envase que es 2 en 1... ¿una cosa para limpiar en 2D y otra adicional?
No tengo más comentario que hacer sobre este producto, aparte de señalar que hemos visto mejores operaciones para incrementar las ventas....

Femina

Entre distribución y promoción... Esta foto es la de una tienda de ropa, Femina. Es una cadena, hay tiendas por todo Madrid. Y si está aquí es porque me parece que el frente de la tienda está muy bien pensado. Me parece que la marca de ropa sólo se vende en esas tiendas (por eso hablaba de distribución) y creo que sin publicidad particular se ha logrado hacer llegar un mensaje muy importante: lo que se vende. En efecto, la letra de "Femina", los colores, los materiales utilizados muestran claramente que el segmento contemplado es el de las mujeres de 45 años en adelante, lo que corresponde a la ropa que se vende, obviamente. Pero la ropa presentada en el escaparate no se ve bien desde el otro lado de la calle (de donde he sacado la foto), el frente, sí...

Urban Fitness

Calle Alberto Aguilera, Madrid. Un gran cartel anuncia la promoción del año: el derecho de utilizar todas las instalaciones del centro deportivo... GRATIS. Obviamente, habrá un asterisco abajo que matizará todo esto, pero en todo caso al ver esto no he podido resistir a las ganas de sacar una foto. Es precisamente lo que ilustra lo que decíamos hace poco en clase sobre el esfuerzo que debe realizar la empresa para minimizar la imagen de gasto. En vez de elogiar la calidad del lugar y del servicio aportado, lo que hubiera justificado el sacrificio pecuniario necesario para acceder a ellos, la empresa ha simplemente decidido anular el gasto... en apariencia evidentemente. Podemos suponer que para aprovecharse de este verano gratis (período en el cual la gente no suele estar en Madrid por cierto), hará falta hacerse socio del club durante un cierto período de tiempo, y pagarlo. ¡Pero eso no importa! Lo que la gente debe ver es que este verano no tendrá que pagar NADA.

Bebé

Esta linda foto es la que tenemos en la portada de nuestros apuntes de inglés este año. Está claro que no es muy seria, pero creo que mucha verdad tiene. ¿Cuántas veces habremos visto niños a penas más grandes que éste con zapatillas Nike por ejemplo? ¿Y cuántos bebés actúan como protagonistas en anuncios de todo tipo? Que pensemos que es una exageración o que el niño, como los otros individuos, es un consumidor que además vende bien, es un hecho: los bebés (cada vez más diría) son un elemento clave en la función de Marketing.

 De paso aprovecho la ocasión para felicitar a Carlos por lo que en Francia llamamos "l'heureux évènement" (el feliz acontecimiento... creo que la traducción suena bastante mal pero la intención sí está presente), ¡y le deseamos las mejores zapatillas Nike!

Fête des Mères

Día de la madre en Francia. Oficialmente: el 28 de mayo. Para Interflora (y todas las empresas que pueden sacar partido del acontecimiento): 27 y 28 de mayo. Efectivamente, hay que admitir que no hay que desaprovechar la ocasión, que este día es uno de los más importantes en el negocio de las flores... pero creo que el poner esos dos días es una pequeña exageración. Sobre todo porque el hecho de que sea el 28 no impide para nada que la gente compre flores con antelación, para tenerlas antes de la fecha precisa. ¿No es como si pusiéramos que Navidad es el 20, 21, 22...?
